Work Environment

The Medical Administrative Assistant program at North-West College provides students with the fundamental skills and knowledge required to work with patients and medical records in a health care or medical oriented environment.

Medical Administrative Assistants work primarily in physician offices, clinics, outpatient settings, hospitals, and other healthcare settings where they handle a wide variety of administrative tasks and duties.

Graduates of the program routinely find jobs working in:

  • Physician’s offices
  • Medical clinics
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing care facilities
  • And other health care related facilities.

Quick Facts about Medical Administrative Assistants*

  • Employment of Medical Administrative Assistants is projected to grow 21 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.
  • The number of individuals who have access to health insurance is expected to continue to increase because of federal health insurance reform. In addition, aging baby boomers will demand more medical services as they become eligible for Social Security and Medicare.
  • An aging population will require more medical services, and Medical Administrative Assistants will be needed to organize medical offices and manage the growing amount of health information data.
  • Most Medical Administrative Assistants work in an office setting and may spend many hours in front of computer monitors. They may work evening or overnight shifts in healthcare facilities that are always open, such as hospitals.
